1859, 5 c. grey blue, stone B, an extraordinary pair from positions 38-39, including the “50” centavos instead of “5” transfer error at left showing the punched hole, unused with part original gum displaying an unusually intense shade, with splendid margins varying from clear to large for the most part.
During the process of transfer, a cliché of the 20 c. denomination was erroneously placed in position 38 of the stone B sheet. The “2” of the “20” was converted into a “5” but the “0” was not erased; when the postal authorities realized this error, position 38 was invalidated on the subsequent sheets printed by the punching out of the centre of the stamp, which resulted in the removal of the shield in the design.
Apart from the existence of one reconstructed complete sheet, only this pair is recorded as showing the punched hole in the transfer error position, these two pieces being the only examples in existence of this error in unused condition. Accordingly this item is of immense significance and is without doubt one of the gems of Colombian philately. Cert. Bortfeldt. Scott 2+(2b); Yv 2+(2a). Ex Frohlich.
