1859, 5 c. grey blue, stone B, position 38 featuring the “50” centavos instead of “5” transfer error, graced by wide balanced margins, being close but clear at base, cancelled by neat pearl oval handstamp of Bogotá.
During the process of transfer, a cliché of the 20 c. denomination was erroneously placed in position 38 of the stone B sheet. The “2” of the “20” was converted into a “5” but the “0” was not erased.
Illustrated on page 29 of Dieter Bortfeldt’s “Colombia Philatelic Handbook and Catalogue”. Small corner crease at bottom left which is far from the design. Only five copies of the “50” centavos transfer error are recorded, which are considered as one of the scarcest varieties in the classic period, with only two copies known in this distinctly greyish shade, of which this example is the vastly superior in quality and one of the finest of the five errors in existence. Cert. Bortfeldt and Rendon. Scott 2b; Yv 2a. Ex Sánchez Vega and Frohlich.
