1860, 5 c. grey lilac, stone A, excellent margins and great freshness, together with 10 c. yellow buff, both tied by ''Honda/Franca'' oval handstamp in blue on cover (slightly reduced at left) from Honda to Havana (Cuba), showing ''(Vapor Rápido)'' endorsement which probably denoted the carriage on a steamship route without stopover between Colombia and Cuba. The franking only paid the domestic rate to the port of despatch, in this case being almost certainly either Cartagena or Santa Marta. An extraordinary item representing the only recorded usage to Cuba in the classic period, this being a very rare usage, at this time, to a non-bordering external destination. The rarity of this cover is enhanced by being one of only three in existence bearing this franking. Cert. Bortfeldt and Moorhouse. Scott 10, 11; Yv 7, 8. Ex Burrus and Hubbard.
