1861, Nov. 20. Stampless entire letter from St. Petersburg to Sydney (New South Wales) The cover should have been carried via Marseilles and India to Australia, nevertheless when the letter arrived to Paris (on front ''Prusse/Valenciennes'' transit in blue) was then directed to London, from there was put on a private steamship which sailed via Cape of Good Hope to Australia. Reverse with arrival ''Ship-Letter-Sydney/March 25 1862'' datestamp. Also on back manuscript ''17/3'' (20 Sgr.) credited to Prussia. A fascinating postal history piece. An extremely rare destination with only four covers still recorded to Australia, three of them offered in this sale.
