1877, January 22. Entire letter from San José to Marseilles, franked by 1873 "Arms" 4 r. mauve tied by blue crayon line with New York transit cds, circular ''T'' and manuscript ''50'' cents accountancy mark in blue and French ''Etats-Unis/Angl. Amb. Cal. F'' entry as well as manuscript ''12'' decimes due to be paid by the addressee alongside. Backstamped on receipt. The cover was undoubtedly handed direct to a ship and the stamp was probably marked in crayon in New York at the same time as the ''50'' marking was applied. New Guatemalan rates were introduced circa two weeks after this cover had been posted. Only six covers were recorded in the Goodman audit bearing this very rare single franking. Cert. Moorhouse. Scott 5. Ex Speycher.
