1872, January 5. Envelope to Rotherham (England), bearing 1871 5 c. bistre-brown and 20 c. rose-carmine with central large numeral ''24'' oval cancel used in Salama, with Guatemala City and London transit backstamps. Carried via Panama by H.M. Packet with small ''A/Colon'' British P.O. transit cds (25 Jan) on front. Docketing "Recd Feb 26 last post" of receipt adjacent to the franking.
The single overseas rate was 25 c. per half ounce, in this case being applied just before being reduced at the end of January 1872. Illustrated on page 46 of Goodman's ''Guatemala-1'' handbook. Horizontal crease through adhesives. A very significant cover of this issue bearing a unique combination franking, with a very rare cancellation usage which augments the desirability of this piece. Cert. Moorhouse. Scott 2, 4. Ex Speycher.
