GREAT SUCCESS AT THE INVESTPHILA AUCTION
The auctions held at Lugano from 30 May to 1 June 2008 have proved a great success overall, both in values achieved and in attendance. Details of the sessions are as follows:AUCTION OF IMPERIAL RUSSIA – WORLD RECORD
The intense – indeed, gripping – Russia auction, consisting of 417 lots with a total starting price of € 1,552,000 proved an immense success, as shown in the successful sale of 87% of the lots and even more clearly in the impressive sums reached – a total of € 5,160,000 (inc. commission), representing a mean raise of 254%. The rarest items set new world records, reaching some quite spectacular levels. The most noteworthy were these:
- Lot 2143: The only recorded mixed franking of first issue and second issue 20 k. on cover. Starting at €150,000, realized €600,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2141: Strip of four of second issue 20 k. on eight weights cover. Starting at €200,000, realized €480,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2086: The “31 December 1857” cover, the earliest franked cover of Russia. Starting at €150,000, realized €408,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2147: The unique combination of second issue 20 k. and 30 k. on cover. Starting at €125,00, realized €336,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2124: The marginal strip of three of the first issue on cover. Starting at €75,000, realized €228,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2145: 30 k., second issue, on cover with pre-philatelic cancellation. Starting at €25,000, realized €192,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2076: “Eagle” surface printed essay in blue cut-to-shape and affixed to cover with trial cancellations. Starting at €50,000, realized €192,000 (inc. commission).
- Lot 2082: The famous Franz Kepler’s essay of the first Russian adhesive, a personal gift from Tsar Nicholas II to A. Fabergé. Starting at €25,000, realized €156,000 (inc. commission).
GENERAL AUCTION
The Switzerland session, including the specialized collection of “Strubel” issues, saw 94% of its lots sold for a total (inc. commission) of CHF 474,840. The most important rarity, a mixed franking of second Munich printing 5 Rp. In mixed franking with 10 Rp. yellow Rayon II, achieved the sum of CHF 96,000.
In the “Rest of the World” section the Latin America session once again had an outstanding success, in particular the very interesting and seldom offered Argentina and Chile collections, which reached a total of €225,190 (inc. commission) from starting prices totalling €129,750: a mean raise of over 73%.
