( )
1869-73, 1/2 r. blue, wide to large margins, tied by red lozenge ''3157'' matching Quito cds, dated 2 August 1873, at right, on front of cover to Rome, prepaying the mailing from Quito to Guayaquil, where the cover was placed on a PSNC steamer, being carried to Panama, with three-lines transit, and then transferred to another British packet boat. ''23'' due marking on arrival, paid with Italian postage dues of 30 c. and 2 l. (defective), tied by Rome cds's. Some edge imperfections and slight soiling, though still a very desirable and visually striking postal history example, being one of only two first issue covers known directed to Italy, as well as one of only two existing combinations of Ecuadorian and Italian stamps in this period, further enhanced by the very scarce late use in 1873. Cert. Moorhouse. Scott 2. Ex Longhi.
