1871, Oct. 10. Cover from Guatemala City to San Francisco (United States), paying the double weight letter rate up to 1 oz for mail addressed to American nations with 1871 5 c. bistre-brown and two copies of 10 c. blue including one lacking upper right corner perforations, tied by quartered corks and large numeral “1” cancel with corresponding “Correos/Guatemala” cds at left. San Francisco cds also tying the 5 c. denomination with manuscript “20” cents due steamship rate on arrival. Stated to be the earliest Guatemalan cover recorded by Goodman in his handbook (illustrated on page 48). Believed to be the only example of this first issue combination franking, also being the second earliest recorded cover of Guatemalan philately. Of impressive appearance for exhibition. Scott 2, 3. Ex Hubbard and Speycher.
